Shaping Stories That Move People

By Nadia Okonkwo

A hook is a promise

The first line of a video is a contract: it tells the viewer what they will get if they stay. Most underperforming content breaks that contract in the second beat, and the retention graph shows it as a cliff at four seconds. Watch the cliff, not the average.

Tension is the whole mechanism

Something has to be unresolved for the viewer to stay. It can be small — an unopened box, an unanswered question, a claim not yet justified — but it has to be there, and it has to still be there at the halfway mark. Content that resolves everything up front is an advert.

Ending somewhere a viewer can act

The last two seconds decide whether attention becomes anything. Not a logo: a next step small enough to take from a phone in a queue. The strongest endings we run are a question, because a question moves the conversation into the comments where the next viewer will read it.

“We swapped our end cards for a question and our comment volume tripled. The comments are now half the reason the posts travel.”
